One more note concerning the life jacket thing -
A lot of people don't want to wear them because they don't think they are going to go for a swim. They're experienced, they're in a nice stable boat...well, here's incontestible proof that it really does happen to the best.

She actually wasn't wearing a lifejacket, but she's also an athlete and waterwoman whose fitness, skill level, and ability to think clearly under the most dreadful circumstances possible are far, far beyond most of ours - and as she herself gratefully acknowledges at towards the end of the French article, she was also very, very lucky that night.
