We were taking out booze cruisers, small parties, friends going out after work, tourists. But no one would defy him, and in silence, we'd round the buoy, listening to water lap on the hull, the wind push the sails, and the ringing of the bell. I'm glad he would make that order, now. How I miss him.bowspritehttp://bowsprite.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10267465.post-9778684973647661872011-03-01T21:02:05.696-05:002011-03-01T21:02:05.696-05:00Really great article Bonnie. I came up with the idea during the day at work and I just couldn't wait to get home.

Pandabonium, another thing I left out of this post was how much certain wildlife likes buoys. I've seen lots of pictures of California sea lions lounging on them -- our local seals seem to prefer beaches, but terns and other birds love to perch on them, and somewhere in my pictures from my Carribean sailing trip a few years, I have a picture of a buoy that had a whole little underwater ecosystem on it, up to and including fish. I'll have to try to find that on lunch.

In the meantime - Joel, glad you liked that mnemonic as much as I did, and OMG, I was absolutely cracking up over your helicopter-assisted sailing video last night. I always enjoyed hearing them, although I'm quite glad that in all the time I spent sailing and paddling NY Harbor, I never saw a fog thick enough that you actually needed to rely on the sounds to tell where you were.bonniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04794351142636136626noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10267465.post-73624288387525426732011-02-28T23:33:46.543-05:002011-02-28T23:33:46.543-05:00Terrific. I have to confess that I love buoys too (not that there's anything wrong with that.)

Actually one of the joys of living where we do now is that we can see buoys from our house, we can see the lights winking at night, and we can hear the bells ringing as they rock in the waves.Tillermanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00639738519386820997noreply@blogger.com
