Being the Continuing Adventures of a Woman and her Trusty Kayak in New York Harbor, the Hudson River, and Beyond.
(with occasional political rants just to keep things lively!)
Happy Oceans Day indeed. No Plastic! I do my best but end up harboring tons of bags to recycle. Even plastic stuff is wrapped in plastic! Are they kidding?
I took this as we were heading for Staten Island weekend before last. Sad thing is I don't think I could've taken this picture this weekend - with all the rain, there was so much junk in the bay.
I'm trying for my Net Zero Plastic day again today - the self-imposed rules for this are simply that I spend a full day without either acquiring or disposing of plastic. I had breakfast at home, I've packed lunch and dinner in reusable plastic containers, and tonight I plan to go play some Irish music and then head home. As long as the bartender doesn't put a straw in my beer, which would just be weird, this could happen. Wish me luck!
I was just saying on Facebook, after announcing the successful completion of my first Net Zero Plastic day (yes! I did it!), that it would be pretty much impossible for a person living a normal life here in the US to get through a day in which they didn't actually use plastic. So many of the single-use things we use it for are so easily avoided with just a little planning, though, and that's really what I'm trying to cut down on - it's the straws and the bottles and the plastic shopping bags and the disposable food containers that are the bulk of the stuff that you see littering the beaches and if I can cut down my share of that, I would like that. Trying to pull off a day where I don't take any plastic and don't throw any plastic away is just an additional challenge, for fun.
Surprisingly tricky though. I was thinking that I might be able to pull off Day 2 but I only made it until 12:30 today, when I went to Dean and DeLuca and ended up buying a caramel bar that appeared to be wrapped in waxed paper, but turned out to have an inner plastic wrapper.
D'OH! Update to the 3:13 comment - SCRATCH THAT. I had leftover Thai food for breakfast. The Thai food came in one of those fold-up paperboard buckets. A query from a friend on Facebook about what I thought of adding cardboard to the attempted zero-net day reminded me of that and then it hit me that those containers are lined with something to keep 'em from getting greasy. Turns out the coating is usually plastic these days. Cue trombone of failure. Mwah mwah mwah mwaaaaaaaah.
