"Reclamation", the powers that be are calling the proposal to turn some number of acres of Jamaica Bay into airport runways. "Reclamation", my okole. Here's another notice that should be of great interest to those who love Jamaica Bay. I highly doubt that I will be able to make it because of work pressures, but I did want to spread the word.

LOL. One of the "moderators" i.e. self-appointed nannies and protest committee chairmen on SailX is called Okole!
Hmmm...and people allow their protests to be adjudicated by someone named -- um -- "Foot"?

Since world oil production peaked in 2005, and the science - if not the popular grasp of - anthropomorphic climate change has become very solid, it is really "okole-anine" (to coin a phrase) to spend money on highways and runways, especially at the expense of wildlife preserves.
As Bugs Bunny would say, "what a bunch of maroons."
"Reclamation" is such a 50's word - turning that useless marshland into useful modern concrete.
"Reclaim" indicates taking something BACK. This is taking something FROM and they should just be straight with people and call it "robbery".
Reclamation is a wonderful thing.
About 120 years ago, they 'reclaimed' the Sacramento River delta. That meant tearing up the largest expanse of natural wetlands in the Western US (which the developers called 'swamps') to put in a lot of dry, useful islands for huge commercial farming conglomerates.
100 years later, most of the birds and fish were gone, the crumbling levies were costing the public millions every year to maintain, the dried peat soil on the islands had mostly blown away in the wind, and the water was polluted from all of the fertilizer runoff.
What to do? Reclaim the delta by spending more millions in public funds to install artificial wetlands.
Reclamation is a wonderful thing.
