Boating Times Long Island article about...who...me??? :D

Strange but fun!

This is pretty cool - I've been writing Frogma for a long time and it's sometimes surprising finding out who's reading it. Well, in August I found out that a writer for Boating Times Long Island had found it and enjoyed it enough that she wanted to do a story about me. I said sure, she sent me some questions, I sent her a hideous pile of verbiage and she took that mess and used it to write an article that (although it feels a little egotistical to say this) I really enjoyed reading! I'd read Boating Times LI before Melissa wrote the article and I really liked the balance they struck between fun on the water and responsible boating; she did that with this article, including the safety tips she'd asked me but still getting the fun factor (which is of course what keeps me doing it!) across.

Click here to check it out - unless of course you've just come here from there, in which case please stop and visit for a while, I've had some very good adventures this summer.  Whalewatching right off my own city, a fantastic surf workshop at Democrat Point,  a Norwalk Island trip, meeting an amazing lady who is paddling from Maine to Guatemala (just scroll down for those three, thet were quite recent), all kinds of good stuff, and maybe best of all, a 7-day solo paddle down the Hudson River from Waterford (just north of Albany) to Brooklyn. That last one totally would've been on my most-memorable list except that Melissa interviewed me a couple of weeks before I left and I was being very superstitious, I couldn't bring myself to brag about something I hadn't done yet, and this was a big first for me, I'd never done a multi-day paddle on my own before. It was great!

That's one of my favorite pictures of me, couldn't resist sending it. One of my friends at Sebago took it after a Proxigean Paddle on January 30, 2010. Twenty degrees out, that's about my lower limit for going out but we did (we did NOT roll though)!

Pix here!

I mentioned in that photo album that that was probably about the coldest weather I'd ever gone paddling in. I think that may still hold the record!

Kayak celebrity. Quite the accomplishment. What a great way to reach people and help encourage them to join in the fun/adventure that awaits on the water. Well done, Bonnie.

Totally impressed. But that happened a long time ago!

Yeah, this was fun. I'm not a publicity hound for myself but I do love to talk about my favorite thing to do as it's practiced here in NYC.

Sometime if we have a long cold weekend I should do a post about the changes I've seen here over the years. I wasn't one of the true paddling pioneers here in NYC (those would've been the folks who bought folding kayaks at the Klepper store in Union Square, put in anywhere they could scramble down to the water, and sometimes had run-ins with the police) but I was a pretty early adopter and it's been interesting watching the growth.

Especially interesting having grown up in a state that's got an unbroken and deeply historic tradition of paddling -- there was a tradition here, it was broken off for a long long time, but it's growing again and it's been a great thing to watch and be part of.

Oh, hey, they're good - I'm just at digging my wetsuit out of the closet and whining about it, and they're already at the cold water safety article!

oooh famous!! it is a lovely piece of writing, and I do like that safety is mentioned more than once,, it terrifies me seeing a whim purchaser getting on the water.. clubs are the best way to go.
