Perfect Weekend Part 2 - PEACHES!

I started off Sunday with a trip to the Courtelyou Road greenmarket. I have been jonesing for peaches for a couple of weeks now, and yesterday, one of the stands finally had Jersey peaches!

You aren't allowed to touch things at the greenmarket these days, so no picking up the peaches to feel whether they have a promising bit of give to them, but I was there pretty early and the vendor picked 6 splendid-looking peaches out for me, and then threw in a bonus one after he'd weighed them.

They weren't quite ready to eat on Sunday, but by Monday morning, this one had softened up and begun emitting a luscious scent. I set it on a silk pillow so that I could photograph it like the precious thing it was - ahhh, the first peach of 2020!

And then I cut it up and had it for breakfast. With, uh, yogurt. That's right, peaches and yogurt, a healthy summer breakfast.

Because what kind of frivolous person would ever have peaches and ice cream for breakfast? The very idea. Hmph.

"Recreate This Selfie"

So my college friend Robert Haynes Peterson shared this today. I absolutely loved those clever recreations of famous paintings people were doing earlier in the COVID lockdown - didn't have the time or the attention span to pull off one of those but I saw this, looked around my desk, and said "Yup, this one I got."

Been a long time since I used the "Just Plain Silly" label anyways!

The Ducks of January

Actually, these were the ducks of April 2014, from a Sheepshead Bay duck walk photo taken in February of that year - I'm not sure I ever shared them here, though! No time for doodling right now as I'm getting ready to fly south for a week myself (can't wait) and the blog is getting neglected for the same reason, but I am taking time for a quack quick post today to to share one of the most entertaining Twitter threads I think I've ever seen.

That's not necessarily saying much as I'm not on Twitter myself and only go there occasionally when a friend shares something, but this is entirely delightful and I'm so glad Laura over at Coast of Illinois saw it and thought of my occasional obsession with (and this is the link to Twitter) artistic anatidae!

Just Another Day At Work, Ho-Hum

So I don't talk about work too much, aside from complaining about having too much, but for anyone who wonders what it's like working in children's publishing, here's a sample. Just another day at Scholastic, ho hum.

Off to the meeting, same as we do every day, yup...

The boss gathered the managers for an emergency meeting and said "Epic agility. Skate to where the puck is going to be."*
NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH Just kidding! Halloween is definitely my favorite holiday at Scholastic - we have an annual costume contest, and although the trade finance team (my division) doesn't join in on it, I absolutely LOVE watching it. We of course have some ridiculously talented and creative people working here, and the costumes they come up with amaze me every year. The only guidelines are that the costumes have to be related to children's books, and just to add the finishing touch of spookiness, Goosebumps author R.L. Stine himself is always one of our judges! Tons of fun, and believe it or not, all of these costumes are made by the participants just for the contest.

AAAGH IT'S SEPTEMBER!!!!

So I read this post at the No More Mr. Nice Pie this afternoon and as I read it it finally sank in to my summer-lovin' skull that yes, really, it's September and the peaches and corn won't be around much longer. NOOOO! With a 3-day weekend it's always OK to leave early (I'd been wrapping things up anyways), so I dashed right off to the Union Square greenmarket. I may have had a slight case of eyesbiggerthanstomachitis, though.

Eclipse Nerd

Late night at work tonight, not likely to get to my Hangar B trip report tonight. In lieu of that, here is a picture a co-worker took of me using my handy-dandy mailing-label-and-sketchbook pinhole projector to view the eclipse.

The glasses are definitely better.
