Cold Water Workshop, Saturday Nov. 12th at Pier 40

Only the penguin hat is optional!

If you're a tri-state area boater who's thinking about extending your boating season into the fall or beyond, here's an event that you might enjoy. Might not have the sheer gleeful lunacy of the one TQ & I go do at the Small Boat Shop in February, where we're all swimming around in the ice, but if you've never gone into the fall & want to know what to wear NOW, Randy's timing is perfect. These things are always fun and infomative and in fact I really think anybody who's thinking of extending their season for the first time really ought to find one of these. There are significant risks involved in cold-water boating, but as any frostbiter will tell you, if you learn about them and prepare properly, there are great times to be had out there in the fall, winter, and early spring.

Randy's is the first one I've heard about around here this season. Can't make it because of time or distance? Lots of outfitters and clubs throw similar events this time of year - make a few calls & I bet you'll find something.

Details from Randy:

At 11 AM on Saturday, November 12th, New York Kayak Co. is presenting a free program on off season paddling, including a chance to try on and water test the full line of Kokatat dry suits, including the new Lightweight Paddling suit that's designed with SUP, surf ski and outrigger paddlers in mind. Tom Harsh from Kokatat, the premier paddle-sports apparel maker, will be joining us totalk about specialized apparel for comfort and safety when paddling in thecolder months. Randy will give a short talk on off season risk management strategies.

Participants who wish to water test dry suits must bring their own submersible foot wear. Reservations are not required, but we'd appreciate an email to let us know that you're coming so we have an idea of how many will be attending. New York Kayak Co.

OK, I think you're all just as wonky as Tillerman, but at least you've found the perfect hat for it.

I like the tag that says "Your penguin is a floatation device".
