It's not the size of the carrot...

But this IS impressive!

Found it at the local farmers' market on Cortelyou Road. The Ledge Rock Farm grass-fed beef guy had some roasts on sale - I got a chuck roast, a couple of these monster carrots, some potatoes & onions & am making a pot roast that may feed me until April!

Oh sure, I've heard it before, it's not the size of the carrot that matters.

It's the taste that's more important. You're more interested in a carrot that you can make a meaningful salad with, one that doesn't embarrass you when friends come over.

But which one did you drag home from the market?

There was just this raw vegetable appeal...irresistable...

I hope you have a big crock pot! Make sure you sear that meat well first for maximum flavor.

Sadly, I don't own a crockpot of any size or even a dutch oven. Made do with a baking dish wrapped up in tin foil. Oven-seared it to start.

BTW, I'd sent this picture to the Ditmas Park Blog, they always like reports of what's good at the greenmarket. They posted the picture, and now there's some very interesting info about these giant carrots in the comments.

Oh, that pot roast is coming along pretty well without a crockpot. It needed a couple more hours than it got last night; I switched all into my big stew pot & it's been on the slowest of simmers all evening. Smells incredible.
