Being the Continuing Adventures of a Woman and her Trusty Kayak in New York Harbor, the Hudson River, and Beyond.
(with occasional political rants just to keep things lively!)
PS - the drawing is going to be around the 30th. I talked to my dad about it last week and in the unlikely event it's my name that gets pulled out of that box, I think there is a VERY good chance I will be asking Nautica, Macy's or Laser Perfomance Inc (whichever one of them is handling the shipping) if they could possibly arrange to just pop it on down to NC.
Dad has a nearby lake; he'd have to work out some details like storage (their development has some strict rules about not storing things like boats on trailers anywhere anyone might see them) but as far as the general idea of having a little sailboat to play with? Very enthusiastic!
My mom never cooked it, but then she was never, ever in a situation where she was forced to walk past a gourmet grocery store just as she was beginning to think about what to make for dinner 5 days of the week out of 7. She probably saves a lot of money that way. Sigh.
However, the way I made it is probably about the same as she would, if she did happen to find herself running afoul of Dean & DeLuca in a moment of weakness - dredged in flour, pepper & spices, browned in butter and olive oil, big onion sliced up & given the same treatment, then a few cups of liquid thrown in (I was thinking some red wine would be nice but what I had on hand was some low-alcohol Beck's that TQ had accidentally bought one time, so I finished that off instead - beer as cooking liquid is definitely something I learned from Mom), simmered for an hour or so & then some veggies thrown in & simmered for a bit longer. Ended up being a bit of a use-up-the-leftovers stew - I had stuff in the freezer that needed to go, chard and pesto from last fall's pickings (I tend to hoard one last bag until the garden's producing again, which it should be if I ever go rescue it from the weeds).
Actually I invited TQ over for dinner - he's going to laugh when he hears that I finally finished off the low-octane beer - that stuff sat in the cupboard for ages before I thought of cooking with it.
I'll be picking up something good to drink on the way home.
Years ago when our children were in 4H & FFA, we bought a day old steer & called him: Sir Loin. We had to bottle feed him at first. When he grew older, I would pat him on the head & tell him, as he licked our arm, "Your tongue is going to taste so yummy" And it did & so did the rest of him!!! I have a good recipe for Hassenpfeffer! It was in the Rabbit Merit Badge Book & also Joy Of Cooking. It is marinaded in vinegar etc. then cooked with onions & served with sour cream. I used to cook it that way when we raised Rabbits. Great Blog!
TQ's sister & brother-in-law usuallyl run a small herd of beef cattle on their property in NC. K. named one of her cows "Patty", thinking "hamburger patty". Pretty soon she caught on to the other pun too - maybe when she was talking to somebody about her cow, Patty.
hahahahaha!
Steak dinners at their place are always spectacular. And utterly guilt-free if you tend to take that track - those cows have a better life than some people.

In fact, better yet: somebody else taking care of the fur before you even get it.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm
I think this thoroughly debunks the myth that rabbit feet bring good luck.
Not in very good taste??
Or very tasty?
Did your mum cook it? what recipe?

Came out pretty good.
Good use of the low-alcohol beer. Now go get some high-alcohol stuff to have with the rabbit.

Deja vu all over again
That's my plan!
