The National Anthem of Estonia (Eesti Hümn)

It's very late, I'm very tired, I still have a few things left on the to-do list before I'm ready to go, but yes, yes, I am getting excited!

1. My fatherland, my joy and happiness,
How beautiful you are!
I shall not find such ever
In this huge wide world
Which would be so dear to me
As you, my fatherland!

2. You have given me birth
And raised me up;
I shall thank you always
And remain faithful to you 'til death,
To me most beloved are you,
My precious fatherland!

3. May God watch over you,
My precious fatherland!
Let Him be your defender
And provide bountiful blessings
For whatever you undertake,
My precious fatherland!

As national anthems go it's a lot better than some.

Thanks! It's beautiful, right? And if the info I've read about it is right, it's especially precious to the Estonians because under the Soviets this song was not sung.

It is the same tune as the Finnish National Anthem.

At least one of the suggestions at the end is also breathtaking.

Tuljak!

Although I am not afraid to criticize various things in my adopted country, I must say I think The Star-Spangled Banner (at least the first verse which is all most people know) is one of the best national anthems in the world.

The French one is rather fine too.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for songs about war?

The only problem with the Star-Spangled Banner is that it's so darned hard to sing. But a good rendition is a stirring thing - everybody's kind of standing up taller when it's over.

And wow. Speaking of singing, and national pride, and stirring renditions - I just learned more about singing and not singing under the Soviets in a new post I just put up.

More Amazing Estonian Song.

When Capt. Kat invited me, I was excited about going sailing for a week. I still am - a week living on a boat is a rare and wonderful treat - but the more I'm learning about Estonia, the more excited I am to go there!
